Horror film The Blackcoat’s Daughter gets release date — exclusive details and photos
Filmmaker Osgood Perkins’ long-awaited directorial debut The Blackcoat’s Daughter will be released in theaters on March 31, EW can exclusively reveal. The horror movie, which stars Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, and Emma Roberts, will also be available to watch exclusively on DirecTV from Feb. 16.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter received it’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival back in 2015, where it played under the title February. Although Osgood’s film was ecstatically-received by many horror critics, its release has been repeatedly delayed. “It’s run into a few little snags here and there with distribution,” Perkins, the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins, told EW last year. “But A24 will release it theatrically at the very beginning of 2017. Honestly, it’s actually rather good. At this point, I can say that I hated it while I was cutting it, and I was nervous about it when we showed it, but the reception was overwhelmingly positive. I quite like it now.”
The Blackcoat’s Daughter centers on Kat (Shipka) and Rose (Boynton), two girls who are left alone at their prep school Bramford over winter break when their parents mysteriously fail to pick them up. While the pair experience increasingly strange and creepy occurrences at the isolated school, the film cross-cuts to the story of Joan (Roberts), a troubled young woman on the road, who, for unknown reasons, is determined to get to Bramford as fast as she can. As Joan gets closer to the school, Kat becomes plagued by progressively intense and horrifying visions, with Rose doing her best to help her new friend as she slips further and further into the grasp of an unseen evil force.
